The Imo State Government has officially confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria disease in parts of the state, with laboratory tests identifying several cases in Mbutu community, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area.
According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Chioma Egu, the ministry has swiftly activated rapid response mechanisms to contain the situation and limit further spread of the disease.
Investigations by correspondents reveal that the outbreak has already claimed six lives in the local government area, prompting authorities to close down both public and private schools as a precautionary measure.
Response Measures Implemented
The Health Ministry, in collaboration with relevant bodies, has deployed surveillance and medical response teams to the affected community. Commissioner Egu outlined several key response actions already underway:
- Free treatment and case management for all confirmed and suspected cases
- Active case search and contact tracing within Mbutu and surrounding areas
- Risk communication and public awareness campaigns on preventive measures
- Provision of diphtheria antitoxins and essential antibiotics
- Targeted immunization for at-risk populations, especially children
"The ministry understands the concerns this development may raise among residents and stakeholders but reassures the general public that the situation is under control," stated Commissioner Egu.
Public Advisory
Residents of Mbutu and neighboring communities have been urged to remain calm and cooperate fully with health workers and officials on the ground. The commissioner emphasized that diphtheria is vaccine-preventable, and early detection and treatment are highly effective.
The public is advised to be cautious of social contact and to report any suspected symptoms such as sore throat, fever, difficulty in breathing, or neck swelling to the nearest health facility or call the disease surveillance team at 08036718000.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. It can lead to breathing problems, heart failure, paralysis, and even death if left untreated. Vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure against the disease.
