Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has admitted feeling 'hurt' after the Red Devils missed out on signing Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who has instead joined Premier League rivals Liverpool.
The 24-year-old Netherlands international had been on Manchester United's radar for several months, but ultimately chose to move to Anfield despite United's interest.
Speaking on his podcast 'Rio Ferdinand Presents', the former England international expressed his disappointment about missing out on the talented full-back.
"Frimpong is going to Liverpool which will hurt me a little bit. I have got to be honest," Ferdinand said. "I think he would fit the way that Ruben Amorim wants to play perfectly."
Ferdinand's comments come just weeks after he had publicly urged Manchester United to sign Frimpong as part of a summer transfer wishlist that also included Adam Wharton, Victor Osimhen, and Matheus Cunha.
The right-back had impressed during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, displaying attributes that would have potentially made him an ideal fit for new United manager Ruben Amorim's tactical system.
This transfer setback represents another challenge for Manchester United as they look to rebuild under Amorim's leadership, while Liverpool have strengthened their squad with a highly-rated defender who had attracted interest from several top European clubs.
United will now need to look at alternative options to strengthen their right-back position as they prepare for the upcoming season.
