The Imo State Police Command has launched an intensive search operation following the killing of a businessman and the kidnapping of his wife along Irete road within Golden Estate, Abba Father avenue, Umuguma in Owerri West Local Government Area.

According to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the couple was traveling in a Highlander jeep with two land agents to inspect a property they had recently purchased when the attack occurred.

"The man was driving with his wife and two agents in his Highlander jeep when masked men carrying guns attacked them. He escaped initially while they held his wife. When he returned to check on his wife, they attempted to kidnap him, but he resisted, resulting in his immediate killing. The assailants then abducted his wife and fled into the forest, abandoning the vehicle at the crime scene," the eyewitness recounted.

The two land agents reportedly escaped the attack, though one sustained injuries. Police later arrived at the scene and evacuated the businessman's body. The identities of the couple have not yet been disclosed.

Police Response

Henry Okoye, the Police spokesperson for Imo State, confirmed the incident and stated that the command has initiated action to rescue the abducted woman and apprehend the perpetrators.

"The Command is aware of this unfortunate incident and has commenced a vigorous operation to uncover the miscreants responsible for the act and ensure they face the full wrath of the law," Okoye said.

He added that following the Commissioner of Police's directive, the Area Commander in charge of Owerri Urban is currently conducting an intensive combing of forested areas in Owerri West LGA to rescue the kidnapped woman.

Civil Society Reaction

Chidiebube Okeoma, State Coordinator of Stand For Humanity Foundation, condemned the incident as a "reckless killing" and emphasized that no society progresses when investors are attacked and killed.

Okeoma warned land investors in the state to remain vigilant and enhance their security measures, noting that kidnappers now appear to be targeting real estate players in the state. He called on the police to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and urged security agencies to strengthen operations in the outskirts of the metropolis.

The incident has raised concerns about security for investors and property developers in the state, particularly those involved in land transactions in less developed areas.
