Nearly 300 people were arrested in Paris following violent clashes between fans and police after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
The celebrations turned chaotic near the Champs-Elysees and Parc des Princes stadium, where approximately 50,000 supporters had gathered to watch the match on giant screens. What began as jubilation quickly deteriorated as some fans began smashing bus shelters, burning cars, and damaging property across the French capital.
Paris police confirmed that most arrests were related to disorderly conduct, including possession of fireworks and other prohibited items. Authorities had deployed 5,400 police officers throughout the city in anticipation of large crowds following the match.
"Troublemakers on the Champs-Elysees were looking to create incidents and repeatedly came into contact with police by throwing large fireworks and other objects," a police statement read.
Despite the unrest, the majority of PSG supporters celebrated peacefully, dancing in the streets, singing club anthems, and honking car horns. The Eiffel Tower was illuminated in PSG's blue and red colors to mark the club's first-ever Champions League title.
French President Emmanuel Macron, known to be an Olympique de Marseille supporter, congratulated the team on social media platform X, writing: "A glorious day for PSG! Bravo, we are all proud. Paris, the capital of Europe this evening."
The victory represents a significant milestone for PSG, which has invested heavily in recent years to secure European football's most prestigious club trophy.
