Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé has opened up about why he was unable to win the UEFA Champions League during his seven-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The 26-year-old forward, who departed PSG as their all-time leading scorer with an impressive 256 goals, addressed the media before France's 2-0 victory over Germany in Sunday's UEFA Nations League third-place playoff.

Mbappé's comments come at a particularly sensitive time, following PSG's remarkable Champions League triumph last season—a feat achieved just one year after his departure to Real Madrid.

"Did I leave too soon? No. My story was over, it had to end. There was no bitterness, I'd reached the end of the road," Mbappé told RMC Sport.

"I would have tried anything. It's just fate that it had to happen without me," he added, attributing the club's European success in his absence to destiny rather than any shortcomings on his part.

The timing of PSG's Champions League victory has been particularly difficult for Mbappé, who came closest to lifting the trophy with the Parisian club in 2020 when they reached the final but lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

In stark contrast, PSG's commanding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in last season's final has led to criticism from fans, pundits, and even club officials directed at the French international.

The situation has become more complex with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly taking subtle jabs at Mbappé, suggesting that scoring in Ligue 1 is more challenging than in LaLiga, where the forward now plies his trade.

Despite the controversy, Mbappé maintains that his departure was necessary and timely, emphasizing that his chapter at PSG had reached its natural conclusion regardless of subsequent events.

The forward now focuses on building his legacy at Real Madrid while PSG prepares to face Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup as European champions.
