At least 21 members of the Kano State sports delegation have died in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State. The fatal incident occurred at Dakatsalle bridge near Kura Local Government Area when their vehicle plunged into a bridge.

According to reports, 35 passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. A survivor, Ado Salisu Gama, who spoke to reporters from his hospital bed on Saturday morning, confirmed that many of his colleagues died on the spot while others were rushed to Kura General Hospital for emergency treatment.

"22 people have been confirmed dead at Dakatsalle bridge, just before Kura. The driver too is dead. As I speak with you, one other member just died," Salisu said, visibly in shock. He added that the remaining survivors are currently receiving medical care at the hospital.

Victims Include Athletes and Support Staff

The victims reportedly include athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and administrators who were part of the Kano State contingent. The delegation had participated successfully in the National Sports Festival, winning 29 medals before the unfortunate incident occurred on their journey back home.

Details about the accident are still emerging as authorities continue to manage the situation. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, though road accidents on Nigerian highways remain a persistent concern due to various factors including poor road conditions, vehicle maintenance issues, and driver fatigue.

This tragedy has cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory return for the team after their sporting achievements at the national competition. The Kano State government has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

The National Sports Festival is Nigeria's premier sporting event that brings together athletes from across the country's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to compete in various sporting disciplines.

BenriNews extends condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire Kano State sporting community during this difficult time.
