The Niger State Government has confirmed that 151 bodies have been recovered following the devastating flood disaster that swept through communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) through its Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Hussaini, on behalf of the Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, the flood primarily affected Tiffin Maza and Unguwan Hausawa communities.
The disaster has resulted in widespread devastation beyond the tragic loss of lives. NSEMA reported that 11 persons sustained various levels of injuries while a staggering 3,018 residents have been displaced from their homes.
Extensive Property Damage
The flood's destructive force has caused significant damage to infrastructure in the affected areas. The agency confirmed that 265 houses across three communities were affected, with 50 households completely destroyed.
Critical transportation infrastructure has also been severely impacted, with two roads washed away and two bridges destroyed, further complicating rescue and relief efforts in the area.
The statement, released in Minna, comes as emergency response teams continue their operations in the affected communities. Earlier reports indicate that Governor Mohammed Umar Bago had expressed sympathy to the families of victims affected by the disaster.
This flood disaster represents one of the most severe in Niger State's recent history, with the scale of casualties and displacement highlighting the devastating impact of extreme weather events in the region.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates on relief measures for the thousands of residents who have lost their homes and livelihoods in this tragedy.
