The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to implement comprehensive reforms in Abuja's transportation sector aimed at enhancing safety, security, and comfort for residents.

Wike made this disclosure on Friday during an inspection tour of the newly completed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals, which are set to be inaugurated as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu's second year in office.

"Obviously a lot of things will happen in the transport sector in the FCT. There will be a lot of reforms," Wike stated, adding that a committee is already working on the reform package, which would be ready before the terminals' inauguration.

Security-Focused Reforms

The minister emphasized that the reforms would include security measures to regulate taxi operations in the capital city. "Because as part of security measures, we must know those involved in taxi business and what colour to use, so that if anything happens, we will be able to identify them," he explained.

Wike further revealed that the FCT Administration is working to eliminate numerous roadside motor parks that currently dot the city's landscape, as part of efforts to streamline transportation services and improve urban aesthetics.

Expanding Terminal Infrastructure

During the inspection, the minister also visited the completed access road to Giri District, another project ready for inauguration.

While the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals are completed and ready for commissioning, the Central Area Bus and Taxi Terminal remains under construction. Wike announced plans to construct two additional terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada Areas, further expanding the transportation infrastructure across the territory.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the completed projects, though he noted some areas requiring correction. He commended the contractor for their performance and pledged continued support for local contractors to deliver quality projects to Nigerians.

These infrastructure developments form part of the FCT Administration's broader strategy to modernize Abuja's transportation system, addressing longstanding challenges of traffic congestion, unregulated transport operations, and security concerns in Nigeria's capital city.
