Nigerian troops have successfully repelled a major attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Damasak town, Borno State, according to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama.
The attempted assault occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday night when a large number of heavily armed insurgents launched an offensive against the military position in the border town.
Makama, who shared the information through his official X handle on Friday, revealed that security sources confirmed the troops engaged the terrorists in a prolonged firefight, effectively thwarting the attack.
"The attackers reportedly in large numbers and heavily armed, were met with fierce resistance from the troops on ground," Makama stated.
According to initial field reports, the soldiers forced the insurgents to retreat with casualties after the intense exchange of fire. However, as of the time of filing the report, the military had not yet released an official casualty figure.
Damasak, a town in northern Borno near the border with Niger Republic, has been a frequent target of insurgent attacks due to its strategic location. The successful defense by Nigerian troops represents another setback for ISWAP's operations in the region.
This incident follows a series of recent military successes against terrorist groups in northeastern Nigeria, where the armed forces have intensified counter-insurgency operations.
The Nigerian military continues to maintain its presence in vulnerable communities across Borno State as part of ongoing efforts to secure the region and protect civilian populations from terrorist activities.
