Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, have expressed serious concerns over the slow pace of rehabilitation and expansion of the Alau Dam, warning that it could trigger another devastating flood similar to last year's disaster.
The concerns were raised during the traditional Sallah homage paid by the Shehu and other dignitaries to the Governor at the Government House, Maiduguri.
Slow Progress Despite Massive Funding
Governor Zulum expressed disappointment over the project's slow progress despite the Federal Government's approval of ₦80 billion for reconstruction. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2025 to signal the beginning of the anticipated work, but little has been accomplished since then.
"After the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction and expansion of the dam, which we all attended, the truth is that the work is not progressing as expected," Zulum stated. "The last time I visited the President, I informed him about the true state of the project. I also brought the matter to the attention of the Vice President and will continue to follow up."
The Governor added that the Secretary to the State Government has constituted a committee to provide immediate intervention at the dam while they await federal action.
Memories of 2024 Catastrophe
The urgency stems from the catastrophic events of 2024 when the Alau dam collapsed, resulting in hundreds of deaths, thousands of displacements, and significant damage to vital infrastructure in Maiduguri and surrounding local governments.
The Shehu of Borno emphasized that at least the first phase of reconstruction should have been completed by now. He cited the recent flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, as a warning of what could happen in Borno if urgent action is not taken.
"We witnessed the catastrophic flooding in Maiduguri on 10th September 2024, and we do not want a repeat. The Federal Government must act immediately."
Broader Development Concerns
Beyond the dam rehabilitation, the Shehu urged Governor Zulum to continue dialogue with the Federal Government on other critical issues affecting Borno State, including oil exploration in Tuba, road rehabilitation, and power supply improvements.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in disaster preparedness and infrastructure maintenance in Nigeria, particularly as climate change increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
