The Nigerian Army has officially denied media reports claiming that protests erupted in Enugu State following the alleged discovery of a live explosive device on farmland.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Eromosele Unuakhalu, acting deputy director of 82 Division Army Public Relations, the military described the reports as "unsubstantiated" and "misleading," stating they lack credible verification.
According to preliminary findings by the Army, no such protest occurred in the region. The statement suggested that the narrative appears to have been fabricated to "incite unwarranted fear and tension" within Ochima and neighboring communities in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Army Reassures Public on Safety Protocols
"The Nigerian Army remains fully committed to the safety and security of all citizens. We have standard operating procedures in place for the employment, handling, and disposal of explosive ordnance whenever necessary, which entails checks and safety measures in collaboration with relevant security agencies," Lt Col Unuakhalu stated.
The statement further reassured residents of Enugu State and the broader South Eastern region that investigations revealed no immediate threat or cause for alarm regarding the unfounded story.
Call for Responsible Information Sharing
The Nigerian Army urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading false or unverified information. The military also called on media practitioners to uphold professional standards by verifying information with relevant authorities before publication.
"The spread of inaccurate reports not only misinforms the public but also undermines collective efforts to maintain stability," the statement emphasized.
This clarification comes amid growing concerns about security in various parts of the country, with authorities working to combat both actual threats and misinformation that could potentially destabilize communities.
