The Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) has extended its condolences to the government and people of Niger State following a devastating flood that wreaked havoc in Mokwa town, resulting in significant loss of lives and property.

In a statement released on Friday, NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, expressed shock at the magnitude of the disaster and pledged solidarity with those affected.

"The Nigeria Governors' Forum stands in solidarity with the government and people of Niger State on the devastating flood that has wreaked huge havoc in Mokwa town of the state," the statement read.

"We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community. We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and express our support to the state government at this difficult time."

Governor Abdulrazaq commended the Niger State Government for its prompt response and coordination with emergency responders to support victims of the disaster.

Climate Change Concerns

The NGF chairman highlighted that the disaster serves as a stark reminder of the realities of climate change and its impact on communities across Nigeria.

"This flood disaster again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live," he noted.

The forum pledged to continue working with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to help affected communities cope with these challenges while strengthening mitigative actions and relief institutions.

Governor Abdulrazaq offered prayers for families who lost loved ones and properties in the Mokwa incident and urged citizens to support government efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

He also called on the public to cooperate with agencies working to assist those in urgent need during this challenging period.

While details about the full extent of casualties and damage were not specified in the statement, related reports indicate that flooding has caused significant destruction in Niger State communities in recent days.
