Former Governor of Sokoto State and serving Senator, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has issued a strong warning to Sokoto residents, urging them to take immediate proactive measures in response to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency's (NiMET) flood warning for the 2025 rainy season.

The Senator made this appeal on Sunday during a gathering at his Gawon Nama residence in Sokoto following Eid-El-Kabir prayers, where he hosted various dignitaries, traditional leaders, and members of the public.

Drawing from his personal experience with the devastating floods that affected the state during his tenure as governor in 2010, Wamakko emphasized the importance of early preparation and preventive measures.

"We must take this seriously. I know firsthand the damage flooding can cause. Everyone must pay attention to the forecasts and act accordingly to avoid loss of life and property," Wamakko stated.

The Senator specifically advised those living in flood-prone areas and near rivers to consider relocating to safer locations or ensure that drainage channels remain clear to facilitate the free flow of water.

"Those living close to waterways should consider moving to safer locations or ensure that the channels are clear to allow water to flow freely. It's always better to prevent disaster than to respond to it," he added.

NiMET's 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction

According to NiMET's 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction, Sokoto and several other northern states including Katsina, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno may experience between 110 to 150 rainy days this year. The agency has forecasted heavy rainfall and potential flooding in these regions.

Beyond the immediate flood risks, NiMET has also warned about possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera in areas with poor sanitation, adding another layer of concern for residents in the affected regions.

While expressing his appreciation to the people of Sokoto for their continued prayers and support, Senator Wamakko urged them to remain united and vigilant throughout the rainy season to minimize potential damages and casualties.
