Unknown hoodlums launched a night-time attack on the airstrip belonging to Ashaka Cement Company in Bajoga Local Government Area of Gombe State, resulting in the death of one suspect during what appears to have been an attempted robbery.
The incident occurred around 11:43 p.m. on Thursday, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the attack on social media platform X on Friday.
According to reports, three assailants armed with cutlasses and sticks infiltrated the restricted area of the company's airstrip. Upon gaining entry, they chased away two civilian guards from Pilgrims Security Company, who managed to escape unharmed.
"The attackers then attempted to cut down a signal tower used for aircraft control, presumably with the intent to steal its components," Makama wrote in his post.
Security personnel from the company, including a patrol vehicle from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), responded promptly to the situation and initially dispersed the hoodlums. However, the attackers reportedly returned to continue their destructive activities.
During a second confrontation with security operatives, one of the suspects was shot in the shoulder. The injured suspect was immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Bajoga for medical attention but was later confirmed dead by the attending physician. His body has been deposited at the public mortuary.
The other suspects fled the scene and are currently being pursued by security forces as investigations into the incident continue.
This attack adds to growing concerns about security challenges facing industrial facilities in northern Nigeria, particularly those with valuable infrastructure components.
