Two people have been confirmed dead following violent clashes between police and hoodlums in Omu-Aran, the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, according to security sources.

The unrest, which occurred on May 25th and 26th, has also raised concerns about the safety of the Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Adeoti, whose palace was attacked during the violence. A security personnel confirmed to reporters on Wednesday that the traditional ruler's whereabouts remain unknown.

During the attack on the palace, a motorcycle was reportedly set ablaze. Attempts to reach both the police public relations officer of the command, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, and the Olomu of Omu-Aran have been unsuccessful.

Origins of the Crisis

According to reports, the violence was triggered when hoodlums attempted to prevent police from arresting an alleged drug dealer in the community. This confrontation escalated into widespread unrest that eventually led to the attack on the traditional ruler's palace.

The Kwara State Police Command announced on Tuesday that five suspects had been arrested in connection with the disturbances. Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo has ordered intensified patrols and surveillance in the area to prevent further violence.

Current Situation

While calm has been restored to the community following the deployment of security personnel in seven Hilux vans, residents remain apprehensive. The police command has urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement, and avoid spreading unverified information.

"The command remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining peace, enforcing the law, and safeguarding lives and property," the police statement read.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence and to locate the Olomu of Omu-Aran.

This incident adds to a series of security challenges that have affected various communities in Kwara State in recent times.
