The Kwara State Fire Service has recovered the lifeless body of a 43-year-old man, identified as Kazeem, from a domestic well in Ilorin, the state capital.
According to a statement released by the fire service spokesman, Hassan Adekunle, on Saturday, the tragic incident occurred at Ile Alapo in the Edun area of Ilorin metropolis.
"The distress call was received by the fire service control room at about 10:29 hours, reporting that a man had fallen into a well," Adekunle stated. "Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene, where they successfully recovered the body from the well."
Substance Abuse Linked to Tragedy
Investigations revealed that Kazeem reportedly jumped into the well shortly after returning from Eid prayers on Friday. Sources indicated he was under the influence of a hard substance locally known as "Colo" (Colorado), a synthetic drug that has been linked to erratic behavior and mental health issues.
The recovered body has been handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the 'C' Division Police Station in Ilorin. Authorities are now awaiting formal identification and claim of the body by the victim's family.
Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, expressed profound sadness over the incident and used the opportunity to caution residents against drug abuse.
"We strongly admonish residents of Kwara State to stay away from drug abuse as such acts often lead to tragic outcomes," Olumuyiwa warned.
Rising Concerns About Colorado Drug
This incident highlights growing concerns about the use of Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid that has gained notoriety across Nigeria for its potent psychoactive effects and unpredictable reactions in users.
Health experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of such substances, which can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and in extreme cases, lead to self-harm or death.
The timing of the incident, occurring during the Eid celebration, has added to the somber mood in the community as residents come to terms with the tragic loss.
Local authorities have urged anyone struggling with substance abuse to seek professional help through available rehabilitation centers in the state.
