The Kano State Government has officially commenced the disbursement of over N16 billion in outstanding gratuities and allowances owed to former local government officials who served under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration between 2014 and 2024.

Governor Kabir Yusuf launched the payment exercise on Wednesday during a formal ceremony in Kano, describing the initiative as a fulfillment of justice and fairness to public servants at the grassroots level.

"This payment is not a favour; it is the rightful entitlement of those who served the state diligently," Governor Yusuf stated during the ceremony. "It reflects our administration's commitment to fairness, justice, and accountability in governance."

The disbursement covers accommodation, leave, housing, and furniture allowances that had been pending for nearly a decade. According to the governor, the former officials had been unfairly denied their benefits under the previous administration.

Phased Implementation

The N16 billion payment will be implemented in three phases:

- Tranche A (2014–2017): 903 beneficiaries to receive N1.8 billion immediately

- Tranche B (2018–2020): 1,198 beneficiaries to be paid N5.6 billion between May and July 2025

- Tranche C (2021–2024): 1,371 beneficiaries to receive N8.2 billion between August and November 2025

The State Executive Council approved the disbursement following what the governor described as "years of neglect" under the previous government.

"We are here to correct the injustice of the past and ensure that those who served Kano State are not left behind," Governor Yusuf emphasized.

Additional Allocations for Current Officials

In addition to settling these arrears, the state has allocated N1.27 billion for housing and furniture allowances for current elected and appointed local government officials. This amount is already being disbursed across the 44 local government councils in the state.

Governor Yusuf commended the work of verification teams, finance officers, oversight committees, and administrative coordinators involved in the process, noting that their diligence helped ensure transparency and credibility in the disbursement exercise.

The payment of these long-standing entitlements marks a significant financial commitment by the current administration to address obligations inherited from previous governments.
