The Anambra State Police Command has announced strategic deployments of security personnel across the state ahead of the planned Biafra Day celebration scheduled for Friday, May 30, 2025.

According to a statement released by the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, a joint security force led by the police has intensified patrols and taken positions at strategic junctions in major cities including Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala, and Oraifite.

The security operation involves multiple agencies including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), as well as Army and Navy personnel complementing the deployment.

"This demonstrates the commitment of the security agencies to maintaining security and order as their heightened presence aims to deter criminal activities, reassure the public, and provide a safe environment for citizens and visitors alike," Ikenga stated.

The police described the planned celebration as "illegal" and organized by "criminal elements," vowing to confront any separatist activities that might threaten peace in the state.

The announcement comes as several schools in Anambra have already declared Friday a lecture-free day due to potential security concerns associated with the celebration.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, noted increased motivation among security personnel stemming from cooperation and support received from Anambra residents who have joined voices to condemn acts threatening peace in the state.

The police spokesperson revealed that a closed-door meeting of Anambra Security Service Commanders had been held specifically to address the planned celebration and coordinate response efforts.

Authorities have urged citizens to provide information about any breach of peace in their areas, with contact numbers for heads of various police divisions made available to the public.

The heightened security measures reflect ongoing tensions surrounding separatist movements in southeastern Nigeria, particularly around commemorative dates significant to pro-Biafra groups.
