The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a shipment of dangerous psychoactive substances cleverly disguised as green tea packages in what officials have described as a sophisticated smuggling operation.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi revealed the seizure on Sunday through a post on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by video evidence of the intercepted consignment. The packages, which appeared to be ordinary green tea imports on the outside, contained illicit psychoactive drugs that could pose serious health risks.

"This consignment is a green tea import in packaging and on the outside. But if you drink it, you may lose your mind because the real and undisclosed content is psychoactive substances as discovered by #ndlea_nigeria officers in one of our latest seizures. Shine your eyes," Babafemi warned in his statement.

Sophisticated Concealment Method

The video shared by the agency shows NDLEA officers methodically unwrapping what appeared to be standard green tea boxes, revealing sachets of hidden substances inside. The deceptive packaging highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods drug traffickers are employing to evade detection by law enforcement agencies.

While specific details about the shipment's origin, intended destination, and any arrests made in connection with the seizure were not immediately disclosed, the agency confirmed that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full scope of the operation.

This seizure comes amid increasing efforts by the NDLEA to combat drug trafficking across Nigeria, with the agency recently reporting several major busts, including the dismantling of syndicates and interception of various illicit substances at ports and borders.

Health experts warn that psychoactive substances can cause severe mental health issues, including hallucinations, paranoia, and in some cases, permanent psychological damage. The disguising of such dangerous substances as common consumer products poses a significant public health risk.

The NDLEA continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious packages or activities that may be related to drug trafficking.
