The Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has called for strengthened partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to enforce proper mining processes and combat illegal mining operations in Jigawa State.
This request was made during a courtesy visit by the Federal Mines Officer in Jigawa State, Mr. Mohammed Muntari, to the NSCDC Command Headquarters in Dutse, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Tijjani Badruddeen, the NSCDC spokesperson in the state.
The visit aimed to enhance inter-agency collaboration for the protection of the state's mineral resources and improve regulation of the mining industry. Muntari expressed concern over the increasing activities of unauthorized miners across different regions of Jigawa, warning that these operations pose significant threats to both the ecosystem and the economy.
"The rampant illegal mining operations in various parts of Jigawa State present considerable risks to our ecological balance and financial well-being," Muntari stated. He emphasized that order could be restored through joint enforcement approaches including regular patrols, information sharing, and compliance monitoring.
While commending the NSCDC for its consistent support in protecting critical national infrastructure, particularly in the mining sector, Muntari urged for greater collaboration in the ongoing fight against illegal activities.
In response, NSCDC Commandant in Jigawa State, Mr. Bala Bodinga, expressed appreciation for the ministry's proactive approach and assured that the Corps stands ready to provide operational support in areas including surveillance of the state's mineral wealth, intelligence gathering, and enforcement responsibilities.
Bodinga highlighted the fundamental importance of institutional cooperation in reducing illegal mining activities and ensuring that all mining operations within the state comply with established laws and regulations. He reaffirmed the Corps' commitment to preserving and safeguarding lives, property, and critical national infrastructure.
The Commandant also emphasized the importance of conducting periodic meetings with stakeholders at the community level and maintaining effective inter-agency communication to enhance the regulation of mining activities throughout Jigawa State.
