Police operatives in Benue State have successfully repelled a suspected bandit attack on Yelwata Settlement during the early hours of Sunday, demonstrating swift tactical response against criminal elements in the region.

According to security sources, the attackers attempted to infiltrate the settlement around 12:22 a.m. but were met with immediate resistance from Tactical Police Teams deployed to the area. The confrontation occurred when operatives tracked the assailants to a location known as Ushongo stream.

During the encounter, the bandits reportedly opened fire on the security personnel but were overpowered by superior tactical positioning and firepower, forcing them to retreat across the river to escape capture.

In a follow-up operation, police conducted a thorough search of the surrounding forest area, where they discovered and subsequently destroyed seven makeshift hideouts that had been used by the criminal group as operational bases.

Security sources confirmed that the area remains under close surveillance as search efforts continue for the fleeing suspects. The operation represents part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat banditry and other criminal activities in Benue State.

This incident comes amid growing concerns about security challenges in various parts of Benue State, with local government officials recently expressing frustration over repeated attacks on communities in the region.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies as efforts to restore peace and security in affected areas continue.
