The Nigerian Army has announced that the situation is under control following an explosion at a bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja on Monday, which reportedly killed one person believed to be a suicide bomber.
In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Army stated: "BREAKING NEWS, explosion at bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja. Situation under control, details later...."
According to eyewitness accounts, the explosion, suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), resulted in the death of one individual and left another person injured. A military personnel at the scene, who requested anonymity, reported that the deceased was believed to be a suicide bomber who was killed by an explosive contained in a rubber can.
However, military authorities present at the location have suggested an alternative explanation, indicating that the explosion might have originated from a phone device rather than an IED. This assessment contradicts initial reports about the nature of the blast.
In response to the incident, a joint security team comprising personnel from the military, Department of State Services (DSS), police, and officers from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was swiftly deployed to the scene to secure the area and conduct preliminary investigations.
The explosion has raised concerns about security in the Federal Capital Territory, coming at a time when authorities have been working to ensure safety across major cities in Nigeria.
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army has assured the public that the situation is under control, with further details expected to be released as investigations progress.
Residents of Abuja are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
