The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) following violent clashes with youths in Rano Local Government Area, with 27 suspects now in custody in connection with the incident.

According to a statement released on Monday evening by the Kano Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the tragic chain of events began when residents complained about a motorcycle rider, identified as Abdullahi Musa, who was allegedly operating his vehicle under the influence and causing noise pollution.

"The suspect was taken into custody and later showed signs of weakness, prompting his being rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away on 26th May 2025 at about 06:00 a.m. while receiving treatment," Kiyawa stated.

The death of the detainee sparked outrage among local youths, who subsequently attacked the police station. During the violent protest, the angry mob looted and set the police station ablaze, fatally injuring the DPO, identified as Baba Ali.

"The DPO was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment," the police spokesperson confirmed.

The Police Command has since arrested 27 suspects in connection with the attack and the DPO's death. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is now under control.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has personally visited the scene of the incident and paid a courtesy call to the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar. The Commissioner has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding both deaths.

This incident highlights growing tensions between law enforcement and local communities in some parts of Kano State, raising concerns about police-community relations and the handling of suspects in custody.

The Police Command has yet to release further details about the 27 arrested suspects or the specific charges they may face as investigations continue.
