A trailer loaded with car tyres was completely razed by fire while in motion at Gurumaraji area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday. The incident, which resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of naira, fortunately recorded no casualties.

In a separate incident on the same day, a petroleum tanker carrying 45,000 litres of petrol crashed at Olunde junction in the Olomi area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital. The tanker, with registration number GBS19XB, swerved off the road and rammed into a nearby gutter, spilling its content in what could have been a catastrophic situation.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed both incidents in a statement released on Sunday. According to Akinwande, the petroleum tanker incident was reported at exactly 12:04 hours, prompting an immediate response from fire personnel led by ACFS Adedeji.

"We quickly blinded the surface of the spillage with chemical foam compound and prevented it from catching fire that might lead to explosion. The incident was as a result of breaking system failure," Akinwande stated.

The second incident involving the tyre-laden truck was reported at 14:38 hours. The INVECO trailer truck caught fire while in motion and was already "well alight" when emergency responders arrived at the scene. The fire service team swiftly took action and completely extinguished the fire.

These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about road safety and emergency response capabilities in Oyo State. The prompt response from the state's fire service potentially averted more serious consequences, particularly in the case of the petroleum tanker where a fire outbreak could have led to an explosion.

Authorities have not yet released information about investigations into the causes of both incidents beyond the brake system failure mentioned in the tanker accident.
