An early morning fire has destroyed a Mazda bus at a mechanic workshop in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, while leaving other vehicles unharmed.
The incident occurred on Monday at a workshop located in front of Alarere Central Mosque, Sawmill Area, Ibadan. The fire affected only the Mazda bus with registration number KWL 943 ZA, Abuja, while the other 47 vehicles stationed at the workshop were spared from the inferno.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the agency received a distress call in the early hours of Monday.
"The fire incident was received through telephone call by agency's control room center at exactly 08:27hrs on Monday 9th June, 2025," Akinwande stated.
"Immediately the address was taken, a crew of firemen led by ACFS Adesina Olusoji swiftly deployed to the scene of the incident. On arrival at the scene, it was a MAZDA bus registration No. KWL 943 ZA (Abuja) engulfed by fire," he added.
Swift Response Prevents Further Damage
According to Akinwande, the fire service team quickly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other vehicles at the workshop.
"The fire was extinguished and necessary advice was given to the owner of the workshop to avert future occurrence," he explained.
The chairman emphasized that the prompt response of the fire service team saved properties worth millions of naira, as only one bus out of forty-eight stationed at the workshop was affected by the fire.
While the exact cause of the fire was not disclosed in the statement, the fire service has advised workshop owners to take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about fire safety in commercial areas across Oyo State, with several fire outbreaks reported in recent months.
