A prominent political figure in Kaduna State, Bashir Zakariya, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for Zone One senatorial district, has died in a fatal auto crash along the Zaria–Kaduna highway on Thursday.
According to party officials, Zakariya was traveling from Zaria to Kaduna when the accident occurred on the busy expressway, resulting in his immediate death.
A Leader of Integrity and Vision
In a statement released by the party's publicity secretary, Zakariya was eulogized as "a man of integrity, courage and vision, whose passion for justice and democracy inspired many within and outside the party."
The statement further highlighted that the deceased "stood for truth, spoke with conviction, and worked tirelessly to grow the SDP in Zone One and beyond," underscoring his significant contributions to the party's development in the region.
Calls for Improved Road Safety
Following this tragic incident, the SDP in Kaduna has appealed to both state and federal governments to intensify efforts aimed at reducing the frequent accidents on the Zaria–Kaduna Expressway, which has gained notoriety for fatal crashes over the years.
The party's call highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on one of northern Nigeria's busiest highways, connecting two major cities in Kaduna State.
As of the time of reporting, funeral arrangements for the late SDP chairman have not been announced by the party or his family.
