The Nigerian Presidency has strongly condemned the circulation of a fabricated statement claiming that President Bola Tinubu declined an invitation from the United States government.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, took to social media on Sunday to denounce the fake statement which falsely claimed that President Tinubu had turned down a White House invitation, citing pressing domestic priorities.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Onanuga issued a stern warning to those behind the fabricated document: "Disinformation agents, hoax peddlers, fake news propagators, clickbaiters at work again. Whoever you are, one day, the law will catch you."
The fake statement, which had Onanuga's name fraudulently appended to it, has been circulating widely on the internet, falsely suggesting an official communication from the State House regarding relations between Nigeria and the United States.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in Nigeria's political landscape, particularly regarding international relations and diplomatic engagements of the presidency.
The Presidency's swift response underscores the administration's commitment to addressing the spread of false information that could potentially impact Nigeria's international standing and diplomatic relationships.
Authorities have not yet identified the source of the fake statement, but Onanuga's warning suggests potential legal consequences for those responsible for creating and disseminating such misleading information.
