The Borno State Police Command has taken a 15-year-old girl into custody following allegations that she dumped her newborn baby in a pit toilet at the Charamari Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Monguno Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Yafalmata Alhaji Mustapha, a resident of the camp, was arrested after the infant's body was discovered early Thursday morning, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama who reported the incident on his official X handle on Friday.
Police officials and medical experts promptly visited the scene where they documented evidence and recovered the infant's remains. The newborn was subsequently transported to the General Hospital in Monguno, where medical personnel confirmed the baby was deceased upon arrival.
Following standard procedure, the infant's body was temporarily placed in the hospital morgue for autopsy. After medical examination was completed, authorities released the remains to the Chairman of the Charamari IDP Camp for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions.
This tragic incident highlights ongoing social challenges within displacement camps across northeastern Nigeria, where thousands of people continue to live after being displaced by insurgency and conflict in the region.
The Borno State Police Command has not yet released details about potential charges against the teenage suspect or the circumstances surrounding the birth and subsequent disposal of the infant.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as concerns about maternal health, teenage pregnancy, and child welfare in IDP camps remain significant issues requiring urgent attention from government agencies and humanitarian organizations.
