The Senate Committee on Army has commended Nigerian troops for their successful counter-terrorism operation in Kukawa, Borno State, which resulted in the elimination of high-profile Boko Haram/ISWAP leader, Amir Abu Fatima, and his lieutenants.

In a statement issued by the committee chairman, Senator AbdulAziz Musa Yar'Adua, the precision military exercise was described as "a significant milestone in our collective fight against insurgency" in Nigeria's northeastern region.

"This victory is a testament to the bravery and dedication of our troops who have steadfastly remained in the forefront. The successful operation demonstrates the military's unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security in the North East," the statement read.

Senator Yar'Adua, a retired military officer himself, particularly praised the strategic planning and intelligence gathering that led to the operation's success without any casualties on the Nigerian side.

The elimination of Abu Fatima, who had a N100 million bounty on his head, represents a significant blow to the terrorist organization's leadership structure and operational capabilities in the region.

"This success will undoubtedly boost the confidence of our citizens and reinforce their trust in the military's ability to protect them," the Senator added.

The committee chairman urged security agencies to maintain momentum in their counter-terrorism efforts, ensuring that insurgents are "relentlessly pursued and dismantled" across affected regions.

While congratulating the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, and the entire Nigerian Army on this achievement, Senator Yar'Adua reaffirmed the Senate's continued support for the troops and pledged to work towards enhancing their operational capabilities.

"Together, we will triumph over terrorism and secure a brighter future for our nation," he concluded.

The operation was carried out by Special Forces under Operation HADIN KAI, the military's counter-insurgency initiative in Nigeria's northeast that has been working to eliminate terrorist threats in the region.
