The Chairman of the Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abu Nmodu, has advised the newly appointed Commissioner of Police to exercise caution when dealing with politicians, warning that they often prioritize self-interest over genuine public concerns.

Nmodu issued this warning during a courtesy visit by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, to the NUJ secretariat in Niger State on Wednesday.

"Politicians only do something when they want something. You are only valuable to them when they need something. When you cannot add value, they will forget you," the NUJ chairman emphasized.

Drawing a parallel between politicians and journalists, Nmodu noted that without a platform, a journalist's usefulness diminishes in the eyes of politicians. He explained that his advice was intended to remind the CP to remain vigilant and prioritize the rule of law amidst potential manipulation by political actors.

The NUJ chairman assured CP Elleman of the union's readiness to partner with the police command in the fight against crime across the state.

In his remarks, CP Elleman expressed his desire to strengthen collaboration with the Niger State chapter of the NUJ, recognizing journalists' crucial role in communicating public concerns to the government.

"I love journalists not just because they are the ears and eyes of the masses, but because they inform the world about pressing issues," he stated.

The Commissioner encouraged NUJ members to share their observations and advice, promising to take their input on policing and governance seriously. He emphasized his commitment to upholding human rights and protecting citizens, rather than using power against them.

CP Elleman also pledged to remain neutral in political matters, ensuring that policing under his command would not favor any political group. He called on journalists to help create a conducive atmosphere for governance and business, highlighting the importance of their role in fostering positive police-community relations.

While thanking the state chairman for the warm reception, the Commissioner reiterated his commitment to professional policing standards that would serve all citizens equally regardless of political affiliations.
