Senate President Godswill Akpabio has disclosed that more states controlled by opposition parties are set to endorse President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national summit on Thursday, Akpabio also revealed that a senator elected on the Labour Party platform is desperately seeking to defect to the ruling party.

"The number of states that are coming to join you (Tinubu) is increasing. As I was leaving, one senator was dragging my dress today," Akpabio stated.

"He said, 'Please take me there.' I said, 'You can't come now,' and he is an LP senator. I don't want to mention his name, he is in my car outside," the Senate President added.

This revelation comes amid a recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC, which has sparked concerns that President Tinubu's government might be steering Nigeria toward becoming a one-party state.

However, both the federal government and the APC have consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that the defections are based on individual political choices rather than coercion.

Political analysts have noted that this trend of defections, particularly with the 2027 elections on the horizon, could significantly alter Nigeria's political landscape and potentially strengthen the APC's position across the country.

President Tinubu, who has previously expressed expectations of more politicians joining the APC, appears to be gaining momentum in consolidating political support nationwide as his administration approaches its midterm.
