The Zamfara State Government has categorically denied viral reports alleging that a 22-year-old woman named Zainab Muhamadu is facing trial in a Sharia court for converting from Islam to Christianity.
In an official statement released by Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson for Governor Dauda Lawal, the state government dismissed the circulating story as "mischievous fake news" deliberately fabricated to incite religious tension in the state.
"There is no case—either ongoing or pending—before any Sharia court in Zamfara State involving a woman on trial for religious conversion," the government clarified in its statement.
According to the government, immediate steps were taken to verify the claims by consulting relevant security agencies and judicial authorities. The Grand Khadi of the Zamfara Sharia Court of Appeal confirmed that no such case exists or has ever existed in any Sharia court throughout the state.
The administration further revealed that the image accompanying the false report was misappropriated. The woman pictured is reportedly an American named Aalia from Texas, not a Nigerian citizen as claimed in the viral story.
"We want to categorically state that it is the handiwork of enemies of peace who are hellbent on creating tension where there is none," Idris said in the statement.
The government has called on security agencies to investigate the origin of the report and prosecute those responsible for its dissemination, describing the situation as "yellow journalism" that must be denounced by all.
The statement concluded with an appeal to media practitioners to verify stories before publication to preserve peace and public trust in the state.
