Team Ogun's Kolade Otunla has clinched a historic gold medal in the men's 100m backstroke at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, while also breaking both national and festival records.

Otunla finished with an impressive time of 1:02.41, surpassing the previous records established in 2018. This achievement adds to Team Ogun's growing medal count at the festival.

Earlier in the day, Ogun State had already secured another gold medal when Omolola Tobiloba won the women's 800-meter freestyle swimming event, further cementing the state's dominance in swimming competitions.

Speaking to reporters after his victory, Otunla shared insights into his winning strategy: "Swimming is not about rushing or breaking out too hard. Just make sure you stay on your pace. 70% of your effort should be when you're going, and once you're coming back, sprint at 100%. When you get to 5 meters, just keep your head straight and maintain your pace, that's the key."

The gold medalist expressed gratitude to his sponsors and coach for their support throughout his training journey. "Thanks to my coach, he's been the one training me, waking me up every day. It's not by my power," he stated.

Looking ahead, Otunla has set his sights on international recognition, declaring his ambition to become an Olympic champion. "I wish to be the Olympic champion, and I'm working towards it," he affirmed.

The Gateway Games 2024 continues to showcase exceptional talent across various sporting disciplines, with Team Ogun making significant strides in the medal standings.
