The Ogun State government has moved to calm fears following a diesel tanker explosion that occurred near one of the venues of the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

The incident, which took place around 3 p.m. near Alake's Sports Complex, involved a diesel truck that was supplying fuel to a generating set when it suddenly caught fire and exploded, disrupting ongoing sporting events.

Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Media and Strategy, issued a statement confirming that the fire was promptly extinguished, preventing any casualties or significant damage.

"The incident this afternoon involving a gas tanker close to one of our facilities for the National Sports Festival was very unfortunate. We thank God that the fire was immediately put out to avert any casualties," Akinmade stated.

He further reassured athletes participating in the National Sports Festival and residents of the state that there was no cause for alarm, emphasizing that the situation was under "absolute control."

The government spokesperson commended the swift response of the state's fire service and the vigilance of officials at the complex, which helped prevent what could have potentially been a more serious incident.

The National Sports Festival, Nigeria's premier sporting event bringing together athletes from across the country, continues in Abeokuta with enhanced safety measures following the incident.

Authorities have assured all participants and spectators that additional precautions have been implemented to ensure the remainder of the competition proceeds without further incidents.
