Team Ogun has emerged victorious in the women's handball match against Team Kogi with a commanding 32-20 win at the ongoing Gateway Games in Abeokuta.
The intense match, played on Tuesday at the Alake Sports Center in Ijeja, Abeokuta, saw Team Ogun establishing dominance early in the game. By halftime, the host team had already built a 16-11 lead against their opponents.
Shola Sekoni, head coach for Team Ogun, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance while speaking to journalists after the match. He praised the state government for providing quality facilities for the games.
"I must first thank the governor for giving us this game. We just started so I will give them 50 percent. I believe we are qualifying and we are getting to the final," Sekoni stated.
The coach also revealed their tactical approach during the game. "At the beginning, it was great but when we saw that we were losing energy later we had to change our game. They cannot understand our pattern," he explained.
Looking ahead to their next challenge, Sekoni confirmed that Team Ogun will face Plateau State in their upcoming match. "Our girls are not leaving any stone unturned to ensure we win," he added confidently.
Despite the defeat, Team Kogi's head coach, Emeka Joseph, maintained a positive outlook. He commended his players' efforts and expressed optimism about their chances in their next fixture.
"The girls did very well even though we couldn't win the match. They played their best. We lost, but we are still satisfied while we prepare for the next match against Plateau state," Joseph said.
He emphasized that his team remains determined despite the setback. "We are not giving up, I believe we are going to win the next match," the Kogi coach affirmed.
Both teams will face Plateau State in their upcoming matches as the Gateway Games continue in Ogun State.
