Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested an alleged notorious bandit and kidnapper identified as Sani Galadi during the screening of intending Muslim pilgrims in Sokoto.
According to reports, the arrest took place on Monday at the Sultan Abubakar International Airport, Sokoto, after security operatives trailed the suspect.
This incident comes barely 24 hours after another suspected bandit and kidnapper, identified as Yahaya Zango, was apprehended at the hajj camp in Abuja. Zango is reportedly linked to multiple kidnapping incidents in Abuja and Kogi State.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) had on May 12 completed the airlift of intending pilgrims from four states to Saudi Arabia. A total of 64,188 Nigerians are expected to participate in this year's pilgrimage.
These arrests come amid an uptick in violent attacks across northern Nigeria, with even military bases not being spared. The Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, announced on Friday that the military has procured new equipment to strengthen efforts against insecurity, including the resurgence of insurgent attacks.
Security agencies continue to maintain vigilance during the hajj operations to ensure the safety of pilgrims and prevent criminal elements from using the pilgrimage as cover for illicit activities.
