A commercial vehicle transporting Kwankwasiyya supporters from Kano North was involved in a road accident on Monday morning in Jaji, Kaduna State, while they were traveling to Abuja to formally defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The incident was confirmed by SLA Bala DPO Kabo, a close associate of Senator Barau Jibrin of the APC, who was leading the delegation of defectors from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
"We were traveling in three vehicles from Kabo with Kwankwasiyya members heading to meet the Senator for defection. As we got to Jaji, a reckless driver suddenly crossed one of our vehicles, causing it to somersault," Bala explained.
According to Bala, the vehicle was carrying 20 passengers who were all rushed to the hospital following the accident. Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries, and the group has since continued their journey to Abuja in another vehicle.
This development comes amid escalating internal crises within the NNPP, both in Kano State and at the national level. The internal rift has reportedly led to increasing defections, with many loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement now aligning themselves with opposition parties, particularly the APC.
The Kwankwasiyya movement, led by former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, has been a significant political force in northern Nigeria. However, recent political realignments have seen some members shifting allegiances ahead of future electoral contests.
Political analysts view these defections as potentially reshaping the political landscape in Kano State, a crucial voting bloc in Nigeria's electoral calculations.
