Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has welcomed thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into his party during a significant political gathering in Kano State.

The mass defection event, which took place on Thursday at Kwankwaso's residence in Kano, marks a notable shift in the state's political landscape ahead of future elections.

Kwankwaso, who leads the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement, announced the development through his official X handle on Friday, describing it as "a momentous occasion."

"Yesterday was a momentous occasion, as I received thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP)," he stated.

The former Kano State Governor assured the new members of fair treatment within the party structure. "Speaking during the event at my residence in Kano, I welcomed the new members into our party and I promised them equitable treatment and cooperation," Kwankwaso explained.

According to the NNPP leader, the party's growing popularity in Kano is attributed to its leadership style and political approach. "The distinguished leadership style in Kano and our political leadership keep attracting more people into our fold, and I encourage those considering joining to do so without any hesitation," he added.

The mass defection comes at a time of political realignments in Kano State, which has been a battleground for major political parties in Nigeria. The NNPP has been gaining significant ground in the state, challenging the dominance of traditional political powerhouses.

Political analysts suggest this development could significantly alter the political dynamics in Kano, which remains one of Nigeria's most populous states and a crucial electoral prize in national politics.
