The Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned a recent armed attack on private radio station Rhythm 94.7FM in Yenagoa, describing the incident as "a rape on the entire media family in Bayelsa and on press freedom."

According to a statement issued on Monday by NUJ Bayelsa Council Chairman, Tonye Yemoleigha, and Secretary, Stanley Imgbi, the attack occurred on two consecutive days - Saturday, May 17, at approximately 2:10 pm and Sunday, May 18, at 4:40 pm.

During the raids, the gunmen reportedly made away with valuable equipment including mobile phones, recorders, and operational gadgets belonging to staff members who were on duty at the time.

The NUJ has called on security agencies, particularly the Commissioner of Police, to investigate the incident thoroughly and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The union also requested that a police patrol van be stationed near the radio station due to its isolated location, similar to security arrangements at other strategic points across Yenagoa.

"We express gratitude to God that no life was lost during the attack," Yemoleigha stated, highlighting the fortunate outcome despite the serious nature of the incident.

This attack on Rhythm 94.7FM raises concerns about the safety of media practitioners in Bayelsa State and underscores the challenges faced by journalists and media organizations in carrying out their constitutional duties.

The incident comes amid growing concerns about the security of media houses across Nigeria, with similar attacks reported in other parts of the country in recent months.
