Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appointed Senator Benson Friday Konbowei, representing Bayelsa Central, as Chairman of the Standing Committee on South-South Development Commission.
Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong was named vice chairman of the committee, which includes several other senators from across the country.
The committee members include Senators Onowakpo Thomas Joel, Benson Friday Agadaga, Neda Bernards Imasuen, Allwell Heacho Onyesoh, Samson Ekong, Samaila Dahuwa Kaila, Mustapha Musa, Patrick Ndubueze, Idiat Oluranti Adebule, and Mustapha Saliu.
Political Background of Senator Konbowei
Senator Konbowei, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), brings extensive political experience to his new role. His political career began in 1992 when he was elected as a councillor.
Over the years, he has held several significant positions in Bayelsa State, including Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government.
Konbowei was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2023, representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District.
The South-South Development Commission is tasked with facilitating development initiatives in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region, addressing infrastructure, environmental, and socioeconomic challenges facing the area.
