A northern coalition of advocacy groups has come to the defense of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, dismissing calls for his probe and suspension as "unnecessary and politically motivated."
The coalition, through its national coordinator Prince Miaphen, issued a statement on Monday addressing allegations that Akume obstructed an N80 billion fraud investigation involving his aide, Torhile Uchi.
Miaphen described the allegations as "unfounded" and designed to distract President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. The group, which aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, condemned the calls for Akume's suspension, characterizing them as baseless and driven by political motives.
"These are orchestrated moves by political saboteurs who fear the success of President Tinubu's administration," Miaphen stated. "We pass a strong vote of confidence in Senator Akume and thank President Tinubu for standing by a man of principle and competence. Nigerians must remain united and not be swayed by false narratives."
The controversy stems from demands by a group known as the Arewa United Patriots, which had called for Akume's suspension over claims that he interfered with a fraud investigation.
As of the time of this report, neither the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) nor the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has issued any official statement regarding the allegations.
The SGF, who serves as a key figure in President Tinubu's administration, has recently been at the center of various political discussions, including his relationship with the Benue State government and his position as a leader in the North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC).
