Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres currently leads the race for the prestigious European Golden Shoe for the 2024/25 season, with Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe in close pursuit as the football season approaches its conclusion.

Gyokeres has established himself at the top of the standings with an impressive 39 goals, translating to 58.5 points following the conclusion of the Portuguese top-flight league. Despite scoring 10 more goals than his nearest rival, the Swedish forward's advantage is slim due to the coefficient system used in calculating Golden Boot points.

The Portuguese league applies a coefficient of 1.5 per goal in the Golden Boot formula, while Europe's top five leagues—including La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1—use a coefficient of 2.0, giving players in these competitions a mathematical advantage.

French superstar Mbappe moved into second place with 58 points after scoring against Sevilla on Sunday, bringing his La Liga tally to 29 goals. The Real Madrid forward will have one final opportunity to overtake Gyokeres when Los Blancos host Real Sociedad in their final La Liga fixture next Saturday.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah holds third position with 28 goals (56 points), followed by Bayern Munich's Harry Kane with 26 goals (52 points). Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski and Atalanta's Mateo Retegui are tied for fifth place with 25 goals each (50 points).

Completing the top 10 are Newcastle United's Alexander Isak (23 goals, 46 points), Sturm Graz and AS Monaco's Mika Biereth (24 goals, 42.5 points), while Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele and Manchester City's Erling Haaland are tied with 21 goals (42 points) each.
