Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has outlined three key positions the club should strengthen ahead of their participation in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup starting next weekend.
Chelsea qualified for the prestigious tournament after winning the UEFA Europa Conference League last season and securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, which earned them a Champions League spot.
Mikel's Transfer Recommendations
Despite Chelsea already securing the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town this summer, Mikel believes the club needs additional reinforcements to compete effectively in the Club World Cup.
"I am excited by the business the club has done. But if we can go again and win the [FIFA] Club World Cup, they [Chelsea's co-sporting directors – Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart] can bring in more money and spend," Mikel told reporters.
The Nigerian football legend specifically identified three positions that need strengthening: "Bring in an experienced centre-back, another midfield player and another winger."
Winger Position a Priority
Mikel highlighted the winger position as particularly important, noting that Jadon Sancho is returning to Manchester United after his loan spell. "If we can bring in another winger who can create chances and score goals, because that's what we [Chelsea] need," he emphasized.
The comments come as Chelsea prepare for what could be a busy transfer window under their current ownership, with the club looking to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
Chelsea's participation in the expanded Club World Cup represents a significant opportunity for the London club to add another major trophy to their cabinet, following their previous success in the competition in 2021.
