Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has pointed fingers at the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following the Citizens' shocking 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Silva expressed particular frustration over VAR's failure to send off Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson for handling the ball outside his box, a decision that potentially changed the course of the match.
"When you have technology, there's just no excuse for the mistakes that happen," Silva said after the match. "I've watched it now, and I think it's a big mistake, because playing 60 minutes with one more player can make a difference."
The controversial incident occurred when Henderson appeared to handle the ball outside his area, denying Erling Haaland a clear goal-scoring opportunity. VAR reviewed the incident but decided against sending off the Palace goalkeeper, who went on to save a penalty and make several crucial stops to keep City at bay.
Despite dominating possession with an impressive 78.3% and recording more shots (23-7) and shots on target (6-2), Pep Guardiola's men failed to find the back of the net. Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute.
"We're a bit too used to these kinds of situations," Silva added, though he was quick to acknowledge Palace's performance. "I don't like to make excuses at the end of games that we lose. I want to give credit to this Palace team, because they're a very good side. They deserved it. They ran like crazy."
The result marks a historic moment for Crystal Palace, who claimed their first major trophy in 120 years. For Manchester City, however, it signals their first trophyless season since 2017, ending a remarkable run of domestic dominance under Guardiola.
The defeat raises questions about City's future direction, especially with recent reports suggesting key players like Kevin De Bruyne may be considering moves away from the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.
