Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has appointed midfielder Bernardo Silva as the club's new captain following Kevin De Bruyne's departure from the Etihad Stadium.

According to reports, Guardiola made the decision personally without putting it to a team vote. The Portuguese international will take over the armband after De Bruyne left the club following the expiration of his contract.

New Leadership Structure

In addition to naming Silva as captain, Guardiola has established a leadership group with three vice-captains: Portuguese defender Ruben Dias, Spanish midfielder Rodri, and Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.

The appointment comes at an interesting time as Silva's current contract with Manchester City is set to expire next summer, meaning he could potentially serve as captain for just one season unless a new deal is agreed upon.

Silva's Future at City

Despite not yet signing a contract extension, Silva has demonstrated loyalty to the club by rejecting several transfer opportunities in recent windows. The 30-year-old midfielder has been the subject of interest from Saudi Arabian clubs and his former team Benfica.

Silva joined Manchester City in 2017 and has been instrumental in the club's success under Guardiola, helping the team secure multiple Premier League titles and domestic trophies during his tenure.

The appointment reflects Guardiola's trust in Silva's leadership qualities and experience as City prepares to defend their titles in the upcoming 2025/2026 season.
