Sunshine Stars FC have been officially relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with head coach Bobola Akinfolarin revealing the team is now awaiting management's decision on their future.

The Owena Whales' demotion was confirmed after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Niger Tornadoes at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode on Sunday, ending their stay in Nigeria's top-flight football division.

Speaking after the match, Coach Akinfolarin acknowledged that their upcoming final fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri would be merely ceremonial.

"The match against El Kanemi is just a formality," Akinfolarin stated. "We are only going there to honour the game and see what the management will decide after the match."

The Akure-based club has endured a difficult campaign, managing just 11 wins, eight draws, and suffering 17 defeats from their 37 NPFL matches this season. This poor run of form has left them unable to escape the relegation zone with just one match remaining.

The relegation marks a significant setback for the Ondo State-owned club, which has been a regular fixture in the NPFL for several years. The team's management is expected to make key decisions regarding the club's structure and strategy as they prepare for life in the lower division next season.

Football analysts have pointed to various factors contributing to Sunshine Stars' relegation, including inconsistent performances throughout the season and challenges with team management.

Fans of the club have expressed disappointment over the relegation, with many taking to social media to call for a comprehensive overhaul of the team's technical and administrative setup to ensure a swift return to the top flight.
