Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Abeokuta Polo Club, marking a significant milestone in the state's sporting development.

The ceremony, which took place on Saturday at the Abeokuta Polo Estate located along Kobape, Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, was described by the governor as a timely development that coincides with Ogun State's preparations to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged 'Ogun Gateway Games 2024'.

Governor Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, commended Sheriff Abdulrahman, the visioner and president of Abeokuta Polo Club, for the initiative which positions Abeokuta alongside Lagos and Ibadan as a key hub for what is often called 'the sport of kings'.

"This is more than a sporting venue. It is a project with significant socio-economic potential, capable of attracting polo enthusiasts alongside players from around the world, boosting tourism, hospitality, and investment in Ogun State," the governor stated.

He emphasized that the initiative aligns with his administration's agenda to make Ogun a preferred destination to live, work, and play, while calling on other investors to explore complementary opportunities in hospitality, infrastructure, and leisure that will further enhance the sporting experience in the state.

The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who chaired the occasion, expressed gratitude that such development was happening during his reign. He described polo as "interesting and classic" while encouraging citizens to join the club and support its development.

Similarly, the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola, noted that the project would promote sporting activities in the state and provide job opportunities for youths once the facilities are constructed. He pledged the support of the Egba Council of Obas towards the success of the project.

In his welcome remarks, Sheriff Abdulrahman, President of the Abeokuta Polo Club, described the occasion as "the beginning of an exciting journey to create a world-class polo club" that will not only elevate the sport in Ogun but also contribute meaningfully to the state's socio-economic development.

Abdulrahman highlighted that the club would attract tourists and visitors to Abeokuta, increasing revenue for local businesses and stimulating economic growth, while also promoting the city's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The establishment of the Abeokuta Polo Club represents a significant addition to Ogun State's sporting infrastructure as it prepares to host the National Sports Festival, further cementing the state's position as a growing sports tourism destination in Nigeria.
