The Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has nominated three distinguished professors for the position of Acting Vice-Chancellor, as the tenure of the current acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, approaches its end on May 19, 2025.

The shortlisted candidates are Prof. AU Nnonyelu, Prof. Carol Arinze Umobi, and Prof. Ada Sam Omenyi. This development comes as Prof. Ikechebelu, who is reportedly vying for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position, prepares to step down in compliance with Federal Ministry of Education guidelines.

According to sources within the university, the guidelines stipulate that a sitting acting Vice-Chancellor is not eligible to run for the substantive position while still in office. Following directives from the university council, Prof. Ikechebelu convened a Senate meeting to nominate candidates for the acting role.

The criteria for selection reportedly include previous experience as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor and being above 65 years of age. The university's council is scheduled to meet on Friday to select one of the three shortlisted candidates for the position.

Sources indicate that intense lobbying has already commenced among the candidates. The appointment process is expected to strictly adhere to Ministry of Education guidelines that promote transparency, equity, and fairness in university administration.

The new Acting Vice-Chancellor will assume office following Prof. Ikechebelu's departure on May 19, guiding the institution until a substantive Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
