The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike action over unpaid June salaries. The industrial action took effect from 12:00 am on Friday, July 4, 2025, following a resolution reached during the union's congress held on June 4.
According to a press statement signed by the University of Jos Branch Chairman, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, and made available to journalists in Jos, Plateau State, the decision aligns with the National Executive Council's directive that branches should take action when salaries are not paid by the third day of a new month.
Strike Implementation Details
The statement reads: "This is to request all members to abstain from lectures and statutory meetings if our salary for the month of June is not paid by 11:59 p.m. This is in line with the extant resolution of the National Executive Council that branches should take action when salary is not paid by the third day of a new month."
Prof. Molwus emphasized that the action was also in accordance with the resolution affirmed during their June 4 congress. He called on all members to fully comply with the directive until further notice, adding that a strike monitoring team has been activated to ensure absolute compliance.
The industrial action is expected to significantly disrupt academic activities at the University of Jos, as lecturers will abstain from all teaching responsibilities and statutory meetings until their demands are met.
This development comes amid growing concerns about funding challenges in Nigeria's tertiary education sector, with several institutions facing similar issues regarding timely payment of staff salaries.
The University of Jos administration has yet to issue an official response regarding the strike action or when the unpaid salaries will be disbursed.
