A student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has tragically lost his life after jumping from a three-storey building following the alleged consumption of hard drugs. The incident occurred around 8:00 pm on Thursday at a lodge near Royal Kitchen junction, close to the university gate in Awka, Anambra State.
According to eyewitnesses, the student, whose identity has not yet been disclosed pending family notification, was rushed to a nearby hospital after the fall but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Residents of the area reported hearing a loud sound before discovering the victim lying in a pool of blood. Further investigation revealed that the deceased had allegedly consumed a hard drug locally known as "Mkpurummiri" before the incident.
More concerning details emerged when authorities found the victim's roommate also under the influence of the same substance. The roommate, who was reportedly in an incoherent state, has been taken into police custody and will be questioned once his condition stabilizes.
As of the time of this report, neither the police nor university authorities have issued an official statement regarding the incident. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to contact the deceased's family.
Rising Concerns About Drug Abuse Among Students
This tragic incident highlights the growing concern about substance abuse among university students in Nigeria. Mkpurummiri, a crystal methamphetamine, has been associated with several cases of erratic behavior and mental health crises among young people in southeastern Nigeria.
The incident raises questions about drug accessibility on and around university campuses and the need for more robust mental health support systems for students.
Educational institutions across the country have been grappling with how to address substance abuse while providing adequate counseling and support services for students dealing with addiction and mental health challenges.
This is not the first incident of its kind in Nigerian universities, as similar cases have been reported in various institutions, prompting calls for more comprehensive drug awareness programs and stricter enforcement of anti-drug policies on campuses.
